The Night That Lasted Forever
Howard Storm was dying on the floor of a Paris hospital room. It was June 1985. He was an art professor from Kentucky. An atheist. A man who had no interest in God, no interest in the afterlife, and no patience for people who did. A perforated duodenum had flooded his abdomen with acid. Surgery was hours away. His wife sat beside him. He told her goodbye.1
What happened next, by the clock, took minutes. Storm's vital signs dropped. His body lay still. The medical staff was not yet in the room.
But Storm was not living through minutes. He was living through what felt like hours. He found himself standing, confused, outside his body. Shadowy figures called to him. He followed them into a darkness that seemed to stretch without end. He was attacked. He lay on the ground in agony. Then, from somewhere deep in his childhood memory, a fragment of a hymn came to him. He cried out. And light came.
What followed was an extended encounter. Storm describes a presence he identified as Christ. He describes a conversation, not a flash of feeling, but a genuine back-and-forth exchange. He describes a life review in which he felt the impact of his own cruelty on his students. He describes a period of teaching. He describes being shown things about the world, about love, about the purpose of human life. He describes a long journey back to his body.
The whole episode, as Storm tells it, lasted longer than any single experience of his waking life. He reports scene changes, emotional arcs, and content that would take hours to recount. The dialogue alone would fill pages.
By the clock on the wall, almost none of that time had passed.
Storm's case is dramatic. But the pattern it reveals is not unusual. It is one of the most consistent findings in near-death-experience research. When people come close to death, time behaves differently. It slows, stretches, stops, or bends in ways no one fully understands. And that strange behavior of time sits at the heart of everything this book is trying to say.
If the moment of death is too brief for anything real to happen, then the encounter with Christ that this book proposes is impossible. There simply isn't time. But if the moment of death can hold more experience than the clock suggests, the objection dissolves. The question of time is the question that makes or breaks the thesis.
This chapter looks at what the research actually tells us about time at the edge of death. What do the people who have been there report? How consistent are those reports? What do they mean for the claim that a dying person can meet Christ in a sigh?
A Second Case: Eben Alexander
In 2008, Eben Alexander contracted a rare form of bacterial meningitis. Alexander was a neurosurgeon. He had spent his career operating on the brain. He knew, in clinical detail, what the brain does and does not do. When the meningitis shut down his neocortex, his medical colleagues documented it. He spent seven days in a deep coma. His higher brain functions were not operating.2
Alexander later reported a long and vivid experience during that coma. He described flying over landscapes of beauty he could not put into words. He met a woman he did not recognize. He later identified her as a biological sister who had died before he knew she existed. He encountered a being of immense light and love. He received what he described as a message. The experience, as he tells it, felt as long and rich as weeks of waking life.3
I want to be honest about the caveats. Alexander's account has drawn criticism. Skeptics have questioned parts of his medical claims. Some factual details of his hospital stay have been disputed. His experience was a prolonged coma, not a brief cardiac arrest. That makes the clinical comparison less clean than other NDE cases.4
But here is what matters for this chapter. Even with every caveat in place, Alexander's report joins thousands of others. People at the edge of death describe experiences far longer than the clinical window allows. Alexander says he lived through weeks. The clock says his cortex was silent. The gap between those two claims is the gap this chapter is about.
A Third Case: George Ritchie and the Tour
Before Storm, before Alexander, there was George Ritchie. In December 1943, Ritchie was a twenty-year-old Army private. He contracted double pneumonia at Camp Barkeley, Texas. He died. The ward physician pronounced him dead and ordered his body taken to the morgue. Nine minutes later, an orderly noticed possible movement. The doctor injected adrenaline directly into the heart. Ritchie revived.5
What Ritchie reported from those nine minutes was astonishing. He described leaving his body. He tried to travel to Richmond, Virginia. He discovered he could not interact with the physical world. Then he was met by a being of overwhelming light whom he identified as Jesus Christ. What followed was what Ritchie called a "tour." He was shown scenes. He was given understanding. He was engaged in conversation. The whole experience would take hours to describe in full.6
Nine minutes by the clock. Hours by Ritchie's inner experience.
Raymond Moody, the psychiatrist whose 1975 book Life After Life launched the modern NDE field, heard Ritchie's story in the late 1960s. Moody has said that hearing it was what first drew him to study the phenomenon.7 The time discrepancy was part of what made the story so striking. How could nine minutes hold a tour?
Ritchie published his account decades later as Return from Tomorrow. It became one of the earliest and most well-known NDE reports. And it established the time puzzle at the very beginning of the field. From the start, researchers noticed that the clock and the experiencer were telling different stories about how much time had passed.
What makes Ritchie's case especially useful is its structure. He does not describe a vague wash of feeling. He describes a tour with distinct stops. He was shown different scenes. He was given explanations. He asked questions and received answers. There were transitions between scenes, moments of surprise, and moments of understanding. The whole thing had the narrative structure of a guided journey lasting hours. And yet the journey happened in the time it took to die and be resuscitated. The content is too rich and too ordered for the available clock time.
Primary Source — Howard Storm on Duration
Storm's account consistently stresses the extraordinary length of his experience. The darkness phase alone felt endless. The rescue came after what seemed like a long time. Then came the life review, the teaching, the dialogue, and the return. He reports emotional arcs, sequential scenes, and detailed content that would need hours to unfold. The clock measured minutes. Storm lived through something far longer. What the clock measures and what the dying person lives through are two different things.
The Systematic Pattern: What the Data Show
Storm, Alexander, and Ritchie are vivid cases. But the pattern they share is not limited to a handful of stories. It shows up across the NDE literature with remarkable consistency.
Bruce Greyson is a psychiatrist at the University of Virginia. He developed the Greyson NDE Scale in 1983. He has spent more than four decades studying near-death experiences. Greyson notes that altered time-perception is one of the most commonly reported features. The Greyson Scale includes "time alteration" as one of its sixteen scored items. It consistently ranks among the most frequently endorsed.8
Pim van Lommel is a Dutch cardiologist. His landmark 2001 study in The Lancet followed 344 cardiac-arrest survivors in the Netherlands. Among those who reported NDEs, altered time-perception was a majority finding. In his later book, Consciousness Beyond Life, van Lommel devotes extended space to what he calls "the timelessness" of the NDE. He treats it as a defining feature of the experience.9
Jeffrey Long is a radiation oncologist who founded the Near Death Experience Research Foundation. He has collected thousands of NDE accounts through its online database. When Long surveyed NDE experiencers about their time-perception during the event, the results were clear. The vast majority said time felt "different" from ordinary experience. A large number said time felt as though it had stopped entirely.10 In his later work, God and the Afterlife, Long extended the analysis. Drawing on the largest NDE survey ever conducted, Long found that experiencers consistently described encounters that were organized, lucid, and temporally extended — far more structured than any model of rapid neural firing can easily explain.10b
Sam Parnia led the AWARE studies, the largest prospective studies of consciousness during cardiac arrest. The AWARE I study (2014) and AWARE II study (2023) found that a number of cardiac-arrest patients reported vivid, structured experiences during the period of documented clinical death. Parnia has noted that these reports often include temporal features that do not match the clinical timeline.11
The reports cluster into several distinct patterns. Let me walk through them one at a time, with an example for each.
Time Expansion
This is the pattern Storm and Ritchie describe. The clinical event lasts minutes. The subjective experience feels like hours, days, or longer. The NDEr returns with a detailed narrative that simply does not fit inside the available clock time.
Time expansion is the most common time-anomaly pattern in the literature. Greyson has documented hundreds of cases. Many NDErs describe their experience as the longest, most detailed event of their lives, even though the clinical window was brief.12
Consider one of Long's database cases. A woman suffered cardiac arrest during surgery. The clinical event lasted several minutes. She reported an experience that included leaving her body, traveling through a tunnel, meeting deceased relatives, having a detailed conversation with a being of light, receiving answers to questions she had carried for years, and returning to her body through a process that felt gradual and deliberate. The narrative she provides would take an hour to tell at normal speed. The clock gave her minutes.13
What makes time expansion so striking is not just the length but the content. These are not vague, dreamy impressions. NDErs report specific conversations. They report sequential events. They report emotional arcs and scenes with enough narrative structure to fill pages. Storm's teaching phase alone includes detailed content. The amount of structured content exceeds what the clinical window could produce under any ordinary model of processing speed.
Time Compression
Some NDErs report the opposite pattern. Instead of time stretching, everything seems to happen at once. The entire experience, which might include a life review covering decades of memories, occurs in what feels like a single flash.
This is time compression. The subjective impression is not of slow unfolding but of instant totality. Everything is present at once.
An NDEr from Long's database described it this way: past and present and understanding all existed in the same instant. There was no before and after. Everything simply was.14
Anita Moorjani's account provides another example. Moorjani, a woman of Indian descent living in Hong Kong, was in the final stages of lymphoma. Her organs were shutting down. She entered a coma. During that coma, she reports an experience that included awareness of everything happening around her, clarity about the causes of her illness, and a felt understanding of her entire life, all happening at once rather than in sequence. She later described it as knowing everything simultaneously.15
Time compression and time expansion might seem contradictory. How can time both stretch and collapse? But they are better understood as two expressions of the same basic fact. Subjective time at the threshold of death is not locked to physical time. In expansion, the subjective clock runs slower than the wall clock. In compression, the subjective clock runs faster, or perhaps leaves sequential processing behind entirely. Both point to the same conclusion: something changes about time when a person is dying.
Key Argument — The Central Claim of This Chapter
The consistent testimony of near-death experiencers is that subjective time at the moment of death does not match clock time. Whether the experience feels expanded (hours inside minutes) or compressed (a lifetime in a flash), the pattern points to the same reality. The dying moment holds far more subjective experience than the clock can measure. This is the empirical foundation for the book's claim that the moment of death can sustain a full, extended encounter with Christ.
Simultaneity
A third pattern sits between expansion and compression. Some NDErs report that events during the experience happened "all at once" in a way that defies ordinary sequence. Yet each event was still individually experienced in full. This is not a quick flash. It is more like being aware of many things at the same time, each with its own detail and richness.
Van Lommel gives particular attention to this pattern. He describes NDErs who report experiencing their entire life review, their encounter with a loving presence, and their journey through a space of beauty all as though they were happening at the same time. The ordinary one-thing-after-another structure of experience was gone. In its place was something like panoramic awareness, where everything was present at once and yet nothing was lost.
Greyson has noted the same pattern. He calls it "nonlinear time." He suggests it may represent a different mode of consciousness. In ordinary waking life, we process events in sequence. One thing happens, then the next. In the NDE, this sequential processing sometimes gives way to a mode in which multiple events are experienced in parallel.16
A cardiac-arrest survivor from the Netherlands, one of van Lommel's study participants, put it simply: "Everything was happening at the same time, and I understood all of it." This is not confusion. It is a different kind of order.
The "No Time" Quality
Perhaps the most puzzling reports are those in which NDErs say that time simply did not exist during the experience. Not that it felt long, or short, or simultaneous. That there was no time at all. The concept itself did not apply.
Van Lommel reports this as one of the most frequently described features. NDErs struggle to put it into words. They say things like: "There was no time there." "Time didn't exist." "The question of how long it lasted doesn't make sense." The experience was vivid and real. But it existed outside the framework of temporal measurement altogether.17
This is the hardest pattern to interpret. What does it mean for an experience to happen "outside time"? The NDEr clearly had the experience. It had content, structure, and movement (in the sense that one thing led to another). But the experiencer insists that our ordinary categories of duration do not apply.
Kenneth Ring, one of the pioneers of NDE research, reported similar findings in his early studies. Ring noted that many experiencers seemed to be describing an entirely different kind of time, not a faster or slower version of the time we know, but something else. He connected this to what some mystics have described as "the eternal now," a mode of awareness in which past, present, and future are all present at once.18
One way to read the "no time" reports is this. The dying person enters a mode of consciousness in which subjective duration becomes uncoupled from any measurable clock. The experience is real. But it cannot be translated into "how many minutes it lasted." That question belongs to a different kind of time than the kind the soul is in.19
The Life Review as the Cleanest Case
Of all the elements of the near-death experience, the life review offers the cleanest window into the time puzzle.
In a life review, the dying person re-experiences events from their entire life. Not as a quick montage. Not as a highlight reel. Many NDErs describe reliving their life in extraordinary detail. They feel not only their own emotions but the emotions of the people they affected. Storm describes feeling what his students felt when he belittled them in class. He felt the sting of his own sarcasm from their perspective. He felt a child's confusion when a teacher meant to help but hurt instead.20
Other NDErs report similar experiences. They relive moments of kindness and feel the gratitude of the person they helped. They relive moments of cruelty and feel the pain they caused. The review is panoramic. It is multi-perspectival. And it is deeply personal.
What surprises many people is that the life review is not a highlight reel. It is not limited to the big events. NDErs frequently report reliving small, forgotten moments. A careless word spoken to a stranger. A moment of patience with a child. An act of quiet generosity that the experiencer had completely forgotten. One of Long's respondents described reliving a moment from childhood in which she had shared her lunch with a classmate who had none. She had not thought about the moment in decades. In the review, she felt the classmate's hunger, the classmate's surprise, and the classmate's gratitude. The whole scene played out in full sensory detail.53
Children who have NDEs also report life reviews. This is important. A child's life is short. There are fewer memories to review. But child NDErs still describe the review as long and detailed. Melvin Morse, a pediatrician who studied childhood NDEs, found that children as young as four described reviewing events from their brief lives with remarkable clarity. A five-year-old described feeling what her baby brother had felt when she was rough with him during play.54 If even a child's short life produces a temporally extended review, the time-dilation is not a function of how many memories are stored. It is a feature of the dying moment itself.
The time implications are staggering. Think about it. A human life spans decades. If a person re-experiences decades of life in full experiential detail, including the emotions of others, how long does that take? If you sat down and tried to relive every significant moment of a forty-year life, feeling every emotion from every perspective, you would need days or weeks.
But the life review happens during a cardiac arrest that lasts minutes. Sometimes seconds. The experiential content of decades is contained within a clinical window of almost no time at all.21
The life review will get its own chapter. Chapter 11 develops the theological reading of what the life review means for judgment, purification, and self-knowledge in the presence of God. Here, I want to focus on the time question. What the life review tells us about time is simple and powerful: the dying moment can hold far more experiential content than any clock-based model predicts.
Insight — The Life Review and the Duration Problem
If near-death experiencers are right that they relived decades of experience in a few clinical seconds, then the moment of death contains vastly more subjective time than the clock allows. The life review is not the only evidence for time-dilation in NDEs. But it is the cleanest. It provides a measurable contrast: a known quantity of experiential content (a lifetime) compressed into a known clinical window (minutes or seconds). The gap between those two quantities is the empirical foundation of this book's thesis.
Greyson has studied the life review in particular detail. He notes that it is reported across cultures, in religious and non-religious NDErs, in children and adults. The content varies. But the temporal structure is consistent: vast experiential content, brief clinical window. Greyson has called it one of the most challenging aspects of NDEs for conventional neuroscience to explain.22
The life review is also the NDE element that most clearly echoes what Ladislaus Boros described philosophically in the 1960s. Boros proposed that the moment of death involves a "total self-encounter" in which the dying person comes to full self-knowledge. He wrote decades before the modern NDE research existed. The NDE life review matches his description with striking precision. We will return to Boros in Chapter 16.23
Skeptical Explanations: Hearing the Other Side
The data are striking. But they need to be tested. Several skeptical explanations have been offered for the time anomalies reported in NDEs. I want to take each one seriously before responding.
The Dying-Brain Hypothesis
The most common skeptical account is the dying-brain hypothesis. On this view, the brain fires rapidly through stored memories as it shuts down. The dying brain compresses a lifetime of data into a burst of neural activity. The subjective impression of extended time is an artifact of this rapid processing, not evidence of genuine time-dilation.24
This explanation has some appeal. We know the brain under stress can process information at altered rates. People in car accidents sometimes report that everything seemed to slow down. A plausible mechanism exists. The amygdala floods with norepinephrine. Attention sharpens. Memory encoding intensifies. The result is a retrospective impression that time passed more slowly.25
But the dying-brain hypothesis runs into problems when pressed against the full data.
First, it might explain time compression. A rapid burst of memories processed all at once could produce a flash-like life review. But it has a much harder time with time expansion. Storm does not report a flash of condensed data. He reports hours of sequential, structured experience. Ritchie does not report a burst. He reports a tour. These accounts include dialogue, teaching, scene changes, and emotional development. A rapid-fire dump of stored memories does not produce that kind of structured, sequential content.26
Second, the hypothesis cannot easily account for the "no time" reports. If the experience is just rapid neural processing, why do some NDErs say that time did not exist at all? Rapid processing is still processing in time. It is fast time, not no time. The concept doesn't fit.27
Third, the hypothesis faces the same problem as all purely neurological accounts of NDEs. It struggles with cases in which the brain was not functioning at all. In the Pam Reynolds case, documented by Michael Sabom in Light and Death, the patient was in hypothermic cardiac arrest with a flat-line EEG. Auditory monitoring confirmed no brain-stem response. Sabom's own neurosurgeon, Dr. Spetzler, stated it plainly: the patient was, by every clinical definition, dead. Her brain had been found dead by all three clinical tests: her electroencephalogram was silent, her brain-stem response was absent, and no blood flowed through her brain. Yet she reported the deepest NDE in Sabom's entire Atlanta Study. If the brain was not functioning, the brain cannot be the source of rapid processing.28
This finding is not isolated. A large-scale analysis of over five thousand NDE cases found that the most severe medical crises — those with the least brain function — correlate with the clearest and most detailed experiences. That is the exact opposite of what the dying-brain hypothesis predicts. If consciousness depended entirely on the brain, then maximum brain dysfunction should produce maximum confusion. Instead, the data show maximum lucidity.28b
A 2013 study by Jimo Borjigin and colleagues found a surge of gamma-wave activity in the brains of dying rats shortly after cardiac arrest. Some researchers suggested this could explain NDEs. But the surge lasted only about thirty seconds, and it has not been confirmed in human subjects under comparable conditions. Even if confirmed, a thirty-second burst does not explain the hours-long experiences Storm and others describe.29
Common Objection — "It's Just the Dying Brain"
The dying-brain hypothesis says that time anomalies in NDEs are artifacts of rapid neural firing, not evidence of real time-dilation. This is a fair hypothesis and should be taken seriously. But it faces four problems. It cannot explain structured, sequential time-expansion reports (Storm, Ritchie). It cannot explain the "no time" reports (van Lommel). It fails entirely in cases where the brain was documented as non-functional (Reynolds). And large-scale data show the opposite of what the hypothesis predicts: as brain function decreases, NDE clarity and veridicality increase (Friend). A hypothesis that explains some of the data but not the full pattern is incomplete.
Post-Hoc Reconstruction
A second skeptical explanation says that NDErs build their memories after the fact. On this view, the actual experience during the crisis was brief or fragmented. The detailed narrative the NDEr tells afterward is a reconstruction. It is built from imagination, expectation, and the normal human tendency to weave scattered impressions into a coherent story.30
Memory reconstruction is well-documented in psychology. We know that people sometimes remember events as more detailed than they actually were. Could NDErs be doing the same thing?
The problem is that many NDErs are quite clear about the difference. Greyson has noted that NDE experiencers often describe their experience as "more real than real." They do not speak about it the way people speak about vivid dreams. They speak about it the way people speak about the most significant event of their lives. Many report that the experience has remained crystal clear for decades. It does not fade the way ordinary memories do.31
Long's research confirms this. In his large-scale studies, NDErs consistently rate the reality of their experience as equal to or greater than ordinary waking life. When asked directly whether it could have been a dream, the vast majority say no. They give specific reasons: the clarity, the coherence, the lasting impact, and the fact that the experience contained information they could not have known otherwise.32
There is also the consistency problem. If the extended narrative is a post-hoc construction, why is it so consistent across unrelated experiencers? Storm, Ritchie, Alexander, and thousands of others did not compare notes. Yet they independently report the same temporal anomalies. Post-hoc reconstruction should produce more variation, not less. The consistency across cultures and individuals is hard to explain as independent fabrication.33 J. Steve Miller's global survey, drawing on the NDERF database of over five thousand cases spanning more than twenty languages, confirms the pattern. When Miller examined consecutive NDE accounts from across the world, the core features — including the temporal anomalies — remained remarkably stable regardless of the experiencer's culture, religion, or prior beliefs.33b
There is also a timing issue that makes the post-hoc view harder to maintain. Many NDErs report their experience immediately after waking, often before they have spoken to family or read anything about NDEs. Ritchie's account was first shared with fellow soldiers shortly after he revived. Storm told his wife and hospital staff. These early tellings contain the same temporal features as the later published accounts. The narrative does not grow richer over time in the way a reconstructed memory would. It arrives fully formed. Greyson has confirmed this through longitudinal studies. He found that NDE accounts remain remarkably stable over decades. Details do not drift the way confabulated memories do.55
Hyperthymesia and Ultra-Rapid Memory
A third explanation appeals to hyperthymesia, or superior autobiographical memory. People with this condition can recall nearly every day of their lives in detail. Could the life review be a hyperthymestic burst triggered by the stress of dying?34
The problem is that hyperthymesia is about content, not time. Hyperthymestic individuals have access to vast stores of autobiographical memory. But they retrieve those memories in ordinary time. They can tell you about a Tuesday in 1987, but it takes them real seconds to do it.
The life review is different. It is not just access to the content of a lifetime. It is the experiential compression of that content into a radically shortened window. Hyperthymesia gives you the data. The life review gives you a different temporal mode for experiencing it. The two phenomena share a feature (rich autobiographical content) but differ in the crucial respect (temporal structure).
Temporal Lobe Activity
Some researchers have proposed that temporal lobe activity during dying might produce vivid, time-distorted experiences. The neuroscientist Michael Persinger suggested that temporal lobe stimulation could produce feelings of a "presence," distortions of time, and vivid sensory experiences. Could NDEs simply be temporal lobe seizures triggered by oxygen deprivation?35
The comparison has surface appeal. Some features overlap. But the comparison breaks down quickly. Temporal lobe seizures produce fragmented, confused experiences. NDEs produce coherent, structured, sequential narratives. Seizure patients rarely report verified information. NDErs often do. And the flat-EEG cases rule out the hypothesis entirely. If the brain is not producing electrical activity, there is no temporal lobe seizure to generate anything.36
Sam Parnia has addressed this directly. He notes that the flat-EEG cases are the strongest evidence against any purely neurological account. They document the absence of measurable brain activity during the period when the NDE reportedly occurred. That absence is not a gap in the data. It is the data.37
There is a further point worth making. Even in cases where brain activity is present, the temporal lobe hypothesis does not explain the time features well. Temporal lobe stimulation produces brief, flickering distortions. It does not produce hours-long structured narratives. A seizure might make a few seconds feel strange. It does not produce a guided tour of the afterlife with dialogue, scene changes, and a full life review. The scale of the experience does not match the scale of the proposed mechanism.
What the Time Data Mean: The Philosophical Implications
If the NDE reports are even approximately accurate, they carry a striking philosophical implication. Subjective time is not identical with physical time. The soul's clock does not have to match the wall clock.
This might sound radical. But it is actually a very old idea.
Augustine wrote about the puzzle of time in Book XI of his Confessions. He argued that time, as we experience it, is something the mind does. It stretches backward through memory. It reaches forward through anticipation. The present moment is a constantly moving point of attention. The clock on the wall measures one thing. The mind measures something else.38
William James devoted a full chapter of his Principles of Psychology to "the perception of time." James noted that subjective duration varies enormously. It depends on attention, emotion, and cognitive state. An hour of boredom drags. An hour of absorption vanishes. Time perception, James argued, is not a passive mirror of clock time. It is an active construction of the mind.39
Henri Bergson went further. In his 1889 work Time and Free Will, Bergson argued that the time we actually live in is fundamentally different from the time of clocks and physics. He called it durée, or duration. Clock time divides experience into identical, interchangeable units. Lived duration is qualitative, flowing, and indivisible. We impose clock time on experience from outside. But experience itself has a temporal character all its own.40
The NDE time data fit neatly into this tradition. When an NDEr says "I experienced hours while only minutes passed," the NDEr is describing exactly the gap Bergson identified. The clock measures one kind of time. The soul lives in another.
William Lane Craig makes a closely related point in Time and Eternity. Craig argues that our experience of temporal passage is "properly basic." It is not an illusion produced by the brain. It is a real feature of our experience, and we are right to trust it. If the dying soul experiences hours, Craig's argument suggests we should take that experience seriously. The soul's time is real time.41
The fuller philosophical case belongs to the appendices of this book. Appendix H develops the A-theory and B-theory question. Appendix I gives the philosophical and scientific foundation for psychological time. Here, I want to flag the basic point. The NDE time data are not philosophically isolated. They fit into a long and serious tradition of thinking about the difference between clock time and soul time.
Note — Clock Time and Soul Time
Philosophers have long distinguished between "outer time" (the measurable time of clocks and physics) and "inner time" (the experienced time of the mind or soul). Augustine, Bergson, James, and Craig all recognized that subjective duration does not have to match clock duration. What the NDE time data add to this tradition is an extreme case. At the threshold of death, the gap between clock time and soul time can become enormous. That gap is the empirical space in which the moment-of-death encounter can unfold.
The Convergence with Boros
I mentioned Boros briefly a moment ago. The convergence deserves a fuller look, even though Chapter 16 gives the full treatment.
Ladislaus Boros was a Hungarian Jesuit theologian. In his 1962 work The Mystery of Death, he proposed that at the moment of death every human being undergoes a "final decision." The German term is Endentscheidung. In this decision, the dying person achieves full self-knowledge. The person encounters God with total lucidity. The person makes a free and definitive choice. Boros wrote from philosophy and theology alone. He had no NDE data. The modern NDE research did not yet exist.
And yet Boros described a temporal quality to the dying moment that reads, today, like a prediction of what NDE researchers would later find. He spoke of the dying person experiencing something outside ordinary time. He described a moment of total awareness that cannot be measured by the clock. The Endentscheidung occurs "at the frontier of time and eternity," in a mode that transcends ordinary duration.42
Notice how precise the convergence is. Boros said the dying moment would involve total self-knowledge. The life review matches. Boros said the moment would feel like it exists outside ordinary time. The "no time" reports match. Boros said the moment would include full awareness of one's entire history. The panoramic life review matches. And Boros said the moment would be decisive, charged with meaning beyond what any clock can capture. The "realer than real" quality NDErs report matches that claim too.
When a philosophical theory predicts features that are later confirmed by independent research, that is a strong reason to take the theory seriously. Boros predicted that the dying moment has a peculiar temporal quality. NDE research confirmed it. The convergence is independent and detailed. Neither Boros nor the early NDE researchers knew about each other's work.
The convergence extends beyond time. Boros predicted a moment of total self-knowledge; NDErs report life reviews. Boros predicted full lucidity; NDErs report heightened consciousness. Boros predicted a Christological encounter; many NDErs report meeting a being of love. But the temporal convergence is where this chapter's focus belongs. Boros said the dying moment is more than the clock can measure. The NDE data say exactly the same thing.
The Connection to the Book's Thesis
Here is where the time data become personal.
This book argues that every dying person meets the risen Christ at the moment of death. The encounter is real, conscious, fully informed, and fully free. It is the mechanism by which God's universal saving love reaches every human soul.
The most immediate objection to that thesis is obvious: there isn't time. The moment of death is too brief. A heart stops. A brain goes silent. Seconds pass. Where, in that slim window, does an entire encounter with Christ fit?
The NDE time data answer that objection.
If the dying soul can experience what feels like hours, days, or longer in a clinical window of minutes or seconds, then the moment of death is not a slim window at all. From the dying person's perspective, it is an enormous room. There is time for a conversation. Time for a life review. Time for questions and understanding. Time for a full encounter. Time for a decision.
From the bedside, your loved one slips away in a sigh. From the dying person's perspective, that sigh may hold the most important hours of her life.
The time-dilation does not prove that the encounter happens. It removes the most obvious obstacle. It creates the space. Whether Christ fills that space is a theological question, not an empirical one. But the empirical data show that the space exists. And that is no small thing.
Consider what this means for the hardest pastoral cases. The infant who dies at birth. The accident victim who is gone before the ambulance arrives. The soldier killed by an explosion he never saw coming. In each case, a person made in God's image dies with no apparent time for anything to happen. The clock says: too fast. The NDE time data say: not necessarily. If a nine-minute death can hold a guided tour, and if a few-second cardiac arrest can hold a detailed life review, then even the briefest death may hold more than the clock allows. The empirical data do not guarantee that the encounter happens in every death. But they remove the objection that says it cannot.
That is what the NDE time data contribute to this book's argument. They are not the argument. They are the floor on which the argument stands. They establish the space. The chapters that follow fill it.
Three Possible Metaphysical Models
How should we understand what is happening when the dying soul experiences time differently from the clock? Three broad models have been proposed. This book does not commit to any single one. Each has strengths. The thesis survives on any of them.
Model A: The Detached Soul
On this view, the dying soul begins to separate from the dying body and brain. As it does, it enters a temporal mode closer to its native, non-embodied state.
In ordinary life, the soul's experience of time is shaped by the brain's processing speed. The brain operates at certain rates. The soul's temporal experience is constrained by those rates. At the moment of death, as the brain shuts down, the constraint falls away. The soul experiences time at its own rate. That rate may be much faster, much slower, or simply different from the rate the brain imposed.43
This model fits naturally with the substance dualism this book affirms (see Chapter 8). If the soul is a genuine substance and not merely a function of the brain, then the soul has its own properties. Temporal experience may be among them. The brain-as-constraint view explains why ordinary life feels like ordinary time and why dying changes the equation. The constraint is lifted. The soul is free. John Cooper argues in Body, Soul, and Life Everlasting that even on a holistic reading of biblical anthropology, the soul must be able to exist and function apart from the body in the intermediate state. If the soul can be conscious without the body at all, then it can certainly experience time differently as the body's grip weakens.43b
This model also fits the NDE data well. NDErs who report heightened consciousness, extraordinary clarity, and expanded time at the moment of death are consistent with a model in which the brain was limiting the soul's natural capacities. Remove the limit, and the capacities expand. Van Lommel has explicitly proposed a version of this model, suggesting the brain functions as a receiver or filter of consciousness rather than its generator.44 A large-scale analysis of over five thousand NDE cases confirms the pattern at scale. The study found that nearly ninety percent of cardiac-arrest patients reported conscious experiences during the period when there should have been no brain activity. And the most severe medical crises — where the brain was least functional — correlated with the clearest perceptions. That finding is exactly what the brain-as-constraint model predicts and exactly the opposite of what pure physicalism expects.44b
Model B: God's Time
A second model says that the encounter takes place in God's time, not the creature's.
God experiences temporal succession. But God is not bound by creaturely clock-time. (The full case for this view is developed in Chapter 13 and Appendix F.) At the moment of death, God draws the dying soul into a wider temporal experience. The soul enters something like God's own temporal mode. The constraints of physics no longer apply. The encounter unfolds at the pace God sets. And that pace can include as much subjective duration as the encounter requires.45
This model has theological appeal. It makes the encounter a gift of God's own time. The dying person is not just experiencing a quirk of brain chemistry. The person is being drawn into the time of the One who made time. The pace of the encounter is set by love, not by neurons.
Think of what this means pastorally. When a person dies in seconds from a sudden accident, the bedside observer sees a terrible brevity. But on this model, God can open those seconds from the inside. God can draw the dying person into a temporal experience as long and as rich as love requires. The encounter does not need to squeeze into clock-seconds. It unfolds in God's time. And God's time has room enough for everything the soul needs to see, to hear, to understand, and to choose.
Model C: A Different Register of Time
A third model says the encounter takes place in a different "register" of time altogether. Not creaturely clock-time. Not exactly God's own temporal mode. Something more like what the biblical vocabulary calls kairos (kairos), the Greek word for an opportune, decisive, or appointed moment. This is distinct from chronos (chronos), the Greek word for measured, sequential time.46
On this view, the dying moment is a kairos-moment. It is a moment in which the quality of what happens matters more than the quantity of clock-seconds it occupies. A single kairos-moment can hold more meaning, more encounter, more decision than years of chronos-time. The full treatment of the chronos-kairos distinction belongs to Chapter 15 and Appendix L. Here, I simply note the model. The dying moment may hold, by God's design, a fullness that transcends measurement.
What makes the kairos model attractive is that it matches the language NDErs actually use. They rarely say, "I experienced twelve hours." They say, "Time was different." They say, "Time didn't apply." They say, "I was outside time." These descriptions sound less like a faster clock and more like a different kind of time altogether. The kairos model respects that language. It says that the dying person enters a mode of experience in which chronos-measurement misses the point. What matters is not how many minutes passed but what kind of moment it was. And it was the most decisive kind of moment there is.
Each of these three models is plausible. Each accounts for the NDE time data. Each is compatible with the book's thesis. I am not committed to choosing among them. What I am committed to is the reality they all seek to explain. At the moment of death, the soul experiences time differently from the clock. That difference is the empirical foundation of this book's central claim.
The Scope of the Evidence
Before closing, I want to be honest about what the NDE time data can and cannot establish.
They can establish that subjective time-dilation at the moment of death is real. The evidence is cumulative, consistent, and cross-cultural. Thousands of independent reports from people who did not know each other, who came from different religions and countries, who were children and adults, who were believers and atheists, converge on the same claim. Time at the threshold of death is different.47
They can establish that the magnitude of the dilation can be enormous. Storm's experience felt like hours. Ritchie's tour covered extensive ground. Life reviews compress decades into seconds. The subjective-to-objective time ratio is not a matter of a few extra seconds. It is a matter of vastly different orders of magnitude.
They can establish that the dilation occurs even when the brain is not functioning. The flat-EEG cases (Reynolds, and cases from Parnia's AWARE studies) are the strongest evidence here. They suggest the dilation is not purely a brain process. A systematic analysis of over five thousand NDE cases confirms the cumulative pattern. It found that thirty percent met the threshold for exceptional or strong evidence of consciousness operating independently of the brain, including more than a thousand cases involving observations from a location distant from the body.48
What the data cannot establish, on their own, is the theological content of the experience. The NDE data show that the dying moment holds enormous subjective time. They do not prove that Christ fills that time. That is a theological claim. It is supported by biblical argument (Chapters 20–24), philosophical reflection (Chapters 13–15), and the convergence with Boros (Chapters 16–17). This chapter's job is narrower: to show that the space exists. The other chapters fill the space.
I also want to be careful about individual cases. NDE research is not a perfect science. Some accounts have been disputed. Some experiencers may misremember details. Some researchers have been more careful than others. I am not claiming that every NDE report is a perfect transcript of the experience. I am claiming that the cumulative pattern, across thousands of independent reports, converges on a real phenomenon. Individual cases may be questioned. The pattern cannot easily be dismissed.
For the reader who wants more, Appendix B provides notable NDE case studies. Appendix J catalogs the major time-dilation cases and reads them for the question of how much subjective time the dying moment can hold.
The Ordinary and the Extraordinary
I want to close with something that may surprise you. The NDE time data are extraordinary. But the basic phenomenon they describe is not.
You already know what it feels like for time to change speed. Everyone does. An hour in a dentist's chair crawls. An hour with someone you love vanishes. A two-minute free fall feels like forever. A week of vacation goes by in a blink. Time perception is not fixed. It varies with attention, emotion, threat level, and cognitive state. This is ordinary human experience.49
Athletes describe this vividly. A basketball player in the final seconds of a close game sometimes reports that the ball seemed to move in slow motion. A race-car driver navigating a spinout describes the sensation of time stretching, each fraction of a second becoming spacious enough for a decision. Combat veterans describe a similar phenomenon under fire. They report that a few seconds of danger held more awareness, more decision-making, and more sensory detail than hours of ordinary life. These are not mystical claims. They are well-documented features of human time-perception under stress.
What the NDE data show is the extreme end of a spectrum we already inhabit. The same basic capacity that makes a boring lecture drag and a good conversation fly is present, in intensified form, at the threshold of death. The dying soul is not entering alien territory. It is entering deeper into a feature of consciousness that was present all along.
This matters because it means the NDE time data do not require exotic explanations. They do not demand that we invent entirely new physics or entirely new categories. They ask us to take seriously something we already know to be true: that the clock does not tell the whole story about time. The clock tells the story of physics. The soul tells the story of experience. And at the moment of death, the two stories diverge more widely than at any other point in life.
Insight — The Ordinary Spectrum of Time Perception
The NDE time data are not a strange anomaly. They sit at the extreme end of a spectrum that includes ordinary experiences: the dentist's chair, the car accident, the absorbed conversation. What changes at the moment of death is not the kind of phenomenon but its magnitude. The same capacity that makes an hour feel like ten minutes can, at the threshold of death, make minutes feel like hours. The extraordinary is an intensification of the ordinary.
Marc Wittmann, a psychologist who specializes in time perception, has documented the range of normal time-distortion. He notes that emotional intensity, threat, and altered states of consciousness all produce measurable changes in subjective time. Wittmann's work provides a scientific bridge between ordinary time-distortion and the extreme cases reported in NDEs.
David Eagleman, a neuroscientist who has studied time perception for years, ran a famous experiment. Participants were dropped from a 150-foot tower into a net. Eagleman found that falling people reported the fall lasting much longer than it actually did. The subjective expansion of time under threat is measurable.50
What Eagleman also found is important. The participants were not actually processing information faster during the fall. They were encoding the experience more richly. The richer encoding made it feel longer in memory.
Eagleman's finding has been used as a skeptical argument: maybe NDE time-dilation is just richer encoding, not genuine expansion. But notice what the argument concedes. It concedes that the subjective impression of extended time is real. The experiencer really does feel that more time has passed. Whether that feeling comes from faster processing, richer encoding, or a genuine expansion of the soul's temporal experience, the subjective reality stands. The dying person lives through more than the clock allows.51
And here is where the substance dualism of Chapter 8 matters. If consciousness is nothing more than brain activity, then Eagleman's "richer encoding" explanation might be the final word. But if the soul is a genuine substance, then the brain's encoding mechanism is only part of the story. The soul may have its own temporal experience. The brain constrains it in ordinary life. Death lifts the constraint. And what emerges is not an artifact. It is the soul's native mode of temporal experience, freed at last. Joshua Farris's theological anthropology makes this point from the constructive side. The soul is not an escape hatch from the body. It is the center of personal identity. When the body fails, the person does not vanish. The soul endures, and with it the capacity for experience, including the experience of time.52
The Moment That Holds More Than You Think
Here is where we land.
The NDE time data, taken together, make one thing clear. The moment of death is not what it looks like from the outside. From the bedside, it looks brief. A few breaths. A pause. Silence. From the inside, if the testimony of thousands of NDErs is even approximately right, it can hold hours, days, or something beyond ordinary measurement altogether.
This is the empirical foundation of everything this book builds. Without it, the thesis faces the objection that there is no time for an encounter. With it, the objection dissolves. The dying moment is not a closing door. It is an opening room.
The chapters ahead will develop the philosophical framework for this claim (Chapter 13, Chapter 14, Chapter 15). They will develop the theological model that fills the room (Chapter 16 and following). But this chapter's job was simpler. It was to show that the room exists.
The clock says seconds. The soul says hours. And if the soul is right, there is space between those heartbeats for the most important meeting of a lifetime.
Think about that the next time you sit beside someone who is dying. The silence you hear may be the longest conversation she has ever had.
